First We Imitate Then We Create!
It is a natural progression of learning an art form, it seems, to imitate our teachers. In dance, through the process of imitating, we develop the movement skills, the rhythmic expression and nuance that we can internalize. By repetitively watching and following our teacher we gain the imprinted skills that allow us to experience our bodies in dance.
Once we develop a more extensive movement vocabulary we gain confidence in our abilities and we experience the desire to expand.
Hopefully, we have a teacher that points us to the resources, such as videos, DVD’s and YouTube, that will expose us to other dancers that will inspire and instruct us in our ‘learning journey’. The more we experience, through observation of the ’style’ of each dancer, the more inspired we become to express our own unique style.
I thought it might be interesting to watch a current ‘Star’ in Egypt, Randa Kamel. Although she has flavors of Egyptian Super Star Lucy..She is very innovative and definitely has her own unique style of Oriental Dance!
Randa has found her own expression, innovation and nuance within the modern Egyptian style. How much she was really influenced by Lucy it is not possible for me to say, yet the similarities are evident in this somewhat current Lucy clip. (*Note: We always have to remind ourselves that although the ‘quality’ of the videos sometimes are less than perfect..at least we have them!) Enjoy!
Lucy is always an inspiration! The other thing is that as a dancer you are always evolving and hopefully, changing and re-inventing yourself! As each of us are unique it follows that our movement, musical interpretation and dance persona will also be unique. If you follow a dancer through the years you will find many ways in which her dance has changed and yet her signature ’style’ remains .
Here is a Wonderful Clip from an Egyptian Movie..when Lucy was young, that is a demonstration of how much we change yet remain the same!
Lovely Lucy!
So, How do you find your own style? Just keep dancing, expanding your horizons, FEELING the music and following your ‘Muse’ !
You ARE your own Style!

I am so glad that you published this. After not dancing for such a long period of time, it is going to be an interesting journey discovering “who – what I am in Dance” again.
Peace and Patience

I am wondering what the words are to the song in the musical Lucy is dancing too?
I met Lucy in Las Vegas. We were all behind the scenes talking to the Producer of the IBDC show about his summer production. We were all working out generous contracts and she said as she met all the American dancers “What do you need me for? There are so many beautiful dancers right here in America”. She declined the invitation to return. She was very gracious and beautiful.
I will see if I can get an ‘overview’ of the translation of that song from Brahim.
I Love that song! Also, Delilah..Thank You for sharing that great story about Lucy!!
Hey Girls, I have asked Delilah to write a guest Blog for us here!!!
Delilah IS her own Style!!!

I love these stories! Keep ‘em coming!

I absolutely *LOVE* Randa Kamel. She has always been one of my favorites.
I’m so glad that you’ve published this as well. I can’t wait to read other people responses.

I am a GODDESS-size woman, I am proud of my size & shape. My 1st teacher was a free-spirit & encouraged students to dance their dance after they learned the basic movements. I studied under many famous & infamous teachers via classes, workshops & DVD’s. I’ve always danced my dance with joy, to have fun–”it’s not that serious” I’m a professional but not making a career out of it. I started at 55 & am now 60y.o. I have my physical limitations & adapt to me. Loving it!
Thank You for sharing with us Pat…and welcome!
It is never too late to start Dancing…and YESSSS!
It is all about Joy! Fun! and Creativity!
It just doesn’t get any better than that!

I wanted to comment on my incredible dance teacher and dear friend, Kathreen. It was through watching you dance and your pure joy of dance that made me a passionate and belly-dancer lover forever! As you said, if you watch your teacher, and enjoy the dance, you will pick up your own style. I alslo believe that watching others dance, professional or not, it all adds to your own style and creativity. My favorite professional star dancer is FiFi. That beautiful woman has the most incredible hip movements. Thank God I have dance class tomorrow. All this talk, has made me ready for dance!

Ditto with Pat’s comment. I started dancing at 46 and Kathreen has inspired me (way beyond anything I imagined) since I met her last year. She is incredible and dances with the grace of a swan and with a kicky fun attitude. She shares EVERYTHING she knows and is proud of her students. She wants us all to love the dance and bring out our inner beauty. Because of Kathreen, I have developed more self confidence in myself and my dancing. BRAVO to Kathreen and all her dancers. Miss you Pat – you are a total DIVA!
As always…you find the best videos. Great inspiration.
I have always danced to my “own beat”!
I miss all of you!
Oh yeah, that would be little ole me here in WV!
Love the notion of dancing your own style.
So many students end up copying their teachers style.
Or should I say some teachers don’t encourage dancers to develope their own dance style.
I feel that is what makes this dance so joyful to watch. Is seeing the uniqueness of each woman expressing the music with the body God gave her. And how the body naturally moves.
Greetings from Delaware
Welcome Viviana…
Thank you for your insightful comments!
Yes! It is truly all about ‘dancing’ your own unique expression…at first we imitate…then we create!
We are happy you have joined us here at Belly Dance Adventures!
